KAYA MAWA LODGE, Lake Malawi, Malawi

We suggest 3 or 4 relaxing nights here, in combination with safari camps in the region.

Lake Malawi is the 3rd largest lake in Africa and teeming with more tropical fish than any other lake on earth. Kaya Mawa Lodge is at the head of a crescent-shaped bay on Likoma Island surrounded by mango trees and ancient baobabs. To visit the island is to step back in time; just 17 sqare kilometers with one small dirt road and two vehicles, the island has hundreds of huge baobab tree, glorious sandy beaches and rocky coves. The waters are crystal clear throughout the year and the diving and snorkeling is amongst the best in Lake Malawi. Translated as 'maybe tomorrow' in the local Tsonga dialect, the lodge uses the stunning natural surroundings to create a lodge of unique character, imagination and very special ambience. With no machinery available on the island, Kaya Mawa Lodge was built entirely by hand in partnership with the local community. The lodge consists of 10 stone and teak-framed thatched cottages set into a granite headland. There is a honeymoon house tucked away on its own private island that is reached by boat or wooden walkway. Each cottage faces the lake and has a large mahogany 4-poster bed, shower, sunken stone bathtub and a toilet with a view. All cottages have private terraces with direct access to the water, and some can only be reached by walkways built over the lake. Delicious, a-la carte meals can be enjoyed in the dining room, which is situated on the main promontory next to the bar and rock pool overlooking the lake. Activities include scuba diving (including Padi diving courses), snorkeling, swimming, sailing and visits to the local villages. Day trips to Mozambique can be arranged. Access is by air or by boat.
