LITTLE KULALA LODGE, Kalahari Desert, Namibia
Sleep under the stars and slide down a dune!
We suggest 2 or 3 nights here, as part of
an itinerary including other Namibian camps, Botswana's Okavango Delta, and Cape
Town in South Africa.
Little
Kulala Lodge is an
acclaimed desert retreat situated in a large private reserve bordering the Namib
Naukluft
Park in the heart of the
Namib. The camp
offers magnificent views of the famous red dunes of Sossusvlei, beautiful
mountainous scenery and vast open plains.
The 11 climate-controlled,
thatched and canvas “kulalas”
(kulala
in the Namibian language Oshiwambo means “to sleep”) merge into the desert
landscape, each built on
a wooden platform to provide maximum airflow. Along with innovative bleached
decks, indoor and outdoor showers and a plunge pool, bedrolls can be placed on a
private stargazing platform on top of each room to sleep under the stars, a
popular option with outdoor enthusiasts. The main lodge has a lounge, bar,
dining area and plunge pool,
with a magnificent view of the dunes.
The veranda overlooks a waterhole, while the rooftop open-air area is perfect
for dinner al fresco.
Early morning guided game drives to the spectacular towering dunes are through a
private gate into the reserve. Game drives and walks are also offered in the
private reserve with incredible views, desert animals and smaller desert fauna
and flora. Another option, at extra cost, is a 60-minute balloon safari at first
light, offering a truly unique experience to soar silently above the magnificent
sand dunes and desert, ending with a champagne breakfast.
