Sabratha Theater built 161-192 AD
Visit the desert town of Ghat, an ancient trading center and one of the most attractive towns of the Libyan oasis with its well-preserved mud-brick medina in the heart of the town. Every year at the end of December an enchanting Tuareg festival takes place in and outside the town for several days. The breathtaking Acacus Mountains offer one of the finest collections of rock art on earth. Bizarre landscapes and rock formations show the way to the paintings and engravings of Wadi Anshal and Tanshal. The red sands follow the paths of famous travelers and explorers like Heinrich Barth. Here in the desert, dig your camp into the sand and listen to the silence. Surmount the endless dune landscape of Ubari in 4x4 vehicles to view the delicate formations and enjoy the sunset. In Erg Ubari, hidden behind huge dunes, are over a dozen lakes. On beautiful days the palm trees and dunes reflect in the water for a fairy tale scenery. Germa is the ancient town of the Garamants, the indigenous people of Libya. Hear more about the rites and cults of the Garamants in the Fezzan at the regions museum. Visit the mosque and fortress in Murzuq, the capital of the Marinides, with its traditional oasis-village atmosphere. In Maknusa, you have the opportunity to see one of the biggest agricultural projects in the country. Leptis Magna, during the height of its prosperity, was the largest and greatest Roman city in Africa. Today its ruins are wonderfully well preserved and one of its signature monuments is the Arch of Septimus Severus. The theatres are one of the oldest stone theatres anywhere in the Roman world. About 1 km east of the port the evocative amphitheatre was hollowed out, with enough space for 16,000 people. In the capital city of Tripolis visit the National Museum, the old Souqs, the Mosque, the Turkish houses and the Arch of Marcus Aurelius. Shop and enjoy the atmosphere and scents of an oriental city.
The Roman city of Sabratha, once a Roman center of trade for African animals and ivory, lies about 80km west of Tripolis. Its former wealth is still evident in its ruins. Tripoli is a safe city were you can move freely or take a taxi and ask for advice or information – Libyans have a warm heart and are helpful and welcoming.
